just wanted to see if theres any used or cheap ones that nobody needs. I looked on craigslist and there wasn't much to offer. i've liked listening to the channels in the past and figured itd be good to have around to entertain me sometimes. just listen to the chatter

Befoer this thread goes that route:

While I believe that scanners are a stop on the way to whackerdom... I also believe that scanners can be useful...
1. For newbies to become familiar with the way dispath and other communications work for your area and
2. If you live in a wildfire, huricanne, flood prone area and advacned knowledge of prolems/evacuations/etc... is helpful to save your neck.

That said... go to Radio Shack or hit E-bay (That's where I got mine for reason #2) and DO NOT use it to sit at home and jump calls because you have a shinny new EMT "Hero" Cert and think that you are the new community protector.

no no, its merely for disaster response. like i stated, im part of the MRC for my county, and I'm in relatively close proximity to where the flat land and forest starts. In another GAP or TEA fire, it'd be good to be able to know asap (aside from looking out my window). radio is the quickest way to get that sorta info. :D

radio shack or ebay.

I enjoy listening to my scanner and no I don't jump calls. PD or FD often get dispatched first to certain types of calls prior to us. I like having a heads up.

Okay, I believe you... maybe. The MRC has no other way to contact you? Although I agree with the fire thing. Almost everyone our here in the mountains (N. or Yosemite) has a scanner in their house for that reason.

The MRC contacts only via cell, and Email. I got an email and call today for precautions for the swine flu, but it was from the Ca disaster relief corp. It was regarding current state actions and deployment. But as for the county, its hard to get a hold of us.

so... when you get the scanner and turn it on... it SHOULD display a frequency correct?

cause mine, go figure, doesn't. thats the problem with Ebay i suppose. aside from that setback, i get the weather channels fine :/. and seems pretty clear sounding

Without knowing the brand and such, couldn't say whether or not ya got a lemon. Ask the experts...

re

I have a Radio Shack Pro 46 you can have. Just needs an antenna, i cant find the dang thing. shoot me a PM where to mail it.

Just plugged it in via 110 and works fine. Will need some new rechargable batteries if you plan on not keeping it plugged in.

Buy used if you want, but I recommend new.

New has a warranty. Old might be analogue, and digital is the way to go. If Used is screwed up, someone's going to have hurt feelings.
