San Diego Paramedic Job?

I am looking to move to San Diego, I have heard that its a tough place to get a paramedic job. So if anyone can spare me a lecture and give me some ideas to work with that would be AWESOME! Any fire departments, any volunteer stuff even to get my foot in the door? I want to be able to keep my skills up if I am going to have to wait a bit to get on a department. Thanks!

R/M & AMR are the biggest players in SD. There is Mercy in northern SD county.
Be advised pay is LOW for all the privates. I'm talking $10/11 hour low for private paramedics and the cost of living in SD is fairly high.
There are a lot of volunteer FDs in the county though. If I were you I'd look into the Indian reservations FDs. There pay is much better than privates and the process is much easier than a municipal department.
