I've observed several derogatory comments regarding the Excelsior medic to RN program. I can appreciate that the lack of clinicals and total online didactic portion gives it a medic mill flavor, turning out a substandard product. I agree that the preferable sequence would be RN>EMT, challenge medic, or EMT>RN>challenge medic. There are some of us who are already medics, and would like to progress to RN for a career change, or as a part time job. Some of us work rotating schedules, such as a XOOXOO or XOXOXOOOO(mine). It may not be possible to drop down to PT or per diem for school. Exchange of shift and paid time off will not be enough to clear the schedule for FT school. Some also have family obligations. That's one of the main reasons online programs were created. If one is determined to earn an assosciate RN, what alternatives would you suggest to the Excelsior program? I've heard of comm. colleges offering online didactic with clinicals, but I haven't looked too much into it. I'm personally going to look into NOVA for their options in the near future. Any additional info/options would be appreciated. Also, I don't want to hear "If I can't clear my schedule for FT school, I'm not serious about this, I'm just looking for shortcuts, and to forget it". I'm looking for helpful suggestions for those who absolutely aren't able to go FT school for various socioeconomic reasons.

Have you looked at the Board of Nursing for your home state of Virginia and read their comments about Excelsior?

Here is their declaration about Excelsior and it lists distance learning programs approved in your state.:

At its meeting on September 16, 2008, the Board considered additional information regarding distance learning nursing education programs. The Board voted to uphold its decision of May 20, 2008. Any student enrolled in a distance learning nursing education program that does not meet the clinical requirements must complete their program by December 31, 2009 in order to be eligible for licensure in Virginia either by examination or by endorsement.

You can see what other states say about Excelsior here:

For more information about programs in your state that are APPROVED just contact the Board of Nursing for Virginia.

Yes, I'm aware of Virginia's position towards the Excelsior program. I'll contact the state board. Thanks for the quick reply.
