Quick and Easy

Just because you can...doesn't mean you should.

To answer the question,

Priority 3 - BLS
Priority 2 - Stable - ALS
Priority 1 - Immediate Life Threat - ALS

this was in reference to already having 1 pt on board and stopping to pick up a couple more. We had a military squad that would hold 4 backboarded pts plus one on the cot. unless mci and low priority, calls for questionable service. I understand being that far away from help, but the original pt you were dispatched and arrived on scene to, takes priority, you have established pt contact.

Yeah, we've taken 4 patients on one ambulance before.

That being said, all from the same scene.

A few years ago I was on the children's hospital ambulance going to pick up a very sick baby. Two EMTs, an RN and an RT. We were code 3 (lights & siren) on our 100 mile rount trip transport. We noticed a slowdown in traffic and then saw a rolled over car on the highway. Since we were en route to an already sick baby at an underequipped facility we decided to report it and keep going to the hospital.

Another time my partner and I were sitting at a red light en route to a nursing home to bring a pt with something minor to the ER when there was a headon collission in the intersection in front of us. We pulled up, got out to check on them and each driver was restrained and ok, so we get back in and drive to the NH. Later in the evening we saw one of the drivers in the ER complaining of back/neck pain. They crashed at about 30-40mph and the cars were totalled.

Where I come from-

Code 1- Scheduled call, like dialysis
Code 2- Immediate response, not life threat, no lights/siren
Code 3- Immediate response, life threat, lights/siren

Ya

Yeah, we've taken 4 patients on one ambulance before.

That being said, all from the same scene.

I've taken 3, same vehicle, drunk father looking for drunk wife middle of night with a 3 year old and a 5 year old-head on into a tree. The 3 year old was in a carseat, not a scratch, 5 year old had possible internal and head injuries and the dad was drunk, enough said.

Transporting critical

Had 4th infant code in 5 months, there were three of us in the back, on the way to the hospital, bad T-bone, between counties, nobody on scene, not even PD, I asked boss, slow down, dump me out with jump bag, I'll to rapid triage and put bistanders to work until squads get here and I'll find a ride to othe hospital. Thankfully, only two injuries, none critical. And i did get my ride to the same hospital to get my 25 mile ride home.

We'll put 3 on the bench seat and one on the cot if they are all green tags but one yellow or red is all it takes to call for additional ambulances. You cannot properly care for a critical patient while also attending to 3 others that also happen to get in your way. Plus 4 reports is a bit much to write so we usually try to take just one.
