I am a student currently taking the EMR course and I am applying to a Florida EMT school for this spring. I suffer from anxiety, which I have learned to control through meditation and relaxation exercises. I do have a prescription for Alprazolam (xanax), however, I do not take it on a daily basis. I take 1 mg about once every two weeks, or once a week at the absolute most. I am going to be drug tested in a couple days as part of my application.

My question is: If I test positive for benzodiazepine, and I show proof of my prescription, will this hurt my chances of being accepted into the EMT program? I ask because I know they would not want someone who relies on such a drug in their program. Should I be worried? or am I good to go?

I would really appreciate some responses.
Thank you.

Generally speaking, a valid prescription outweighs a drug test. That being said, there's always going to be that one service that says no. Likely not for BZDs or Adderall, but it's possible.

Bottom line, keep your mouth shut until it's a problem, then whip out your prescription and see what happens. Chances are excellent you'll be fine.
