Hey,

Just a question about medic school. Would working as an ER tech count towards the hours needed to fulfill a Medic School req?

asking because my school is in recess so I can't get info about it so just wondering if y'all knew.

Thanks!

I'm sure this is the answer you were dreading to hear..... depends on the school:P

If you were to provide the name of the school, we may be able to help you.

We had ED techs in my class and at my school, no your time did not count. I think this was mainly because you where on the clock for the hospital, not being a student for free racking up school hours under your schools insurance with a preceptor and operating under your medic skills. Also your school may require you to doc anywhere from 600-2000 hours the standards are just random across the U.S.

A lot of medic students work 911 as EMT's and I have never herd that time counting toward there field hours or internship.

No legitimate school anyway. I get asked this question every semester.

I'm pretty sure most states require that you document a certain number of hours as an intern, signed off on and evaluated by a preceptor, and that in that time you rotate through various areas of the hospital and perform various skills under supervision.

So, I'd say it's unlikely.

Wait... are you saying would it count towards the required clinical time, or the "experience" needed to get in to school?

That's what I read into it. I would think that an ER tech, is much better experience then working a convo truck.

ahh ok.. thanks guys! yea i was hoping that it would because EMT jobs are a bit scarce i hear.

the school i'm going to be applying for will be Foothill College in the South Bay Area, California.

time to keep looking i guess :P
