It was the second day of class and we were practicing giving IM, SC, and Intradermal injections. I did fine physically giving the injections, but on the IM injection I made a loud "OOOOOOH S***" sound when I went into my fellow class mates arm. I did that 2 out of the 3 times I did it. I didn't mean to say it but it just came out. I felt like on one of them I hit a bone and I actually heard/felt a "thud" when it stopped. But my classmate said it didn't hurt at all. I'm going to try and bite my tongue every time I do anything. I was just wondering if anyone has ever had this problem?

I have a little bit of clinical/field experience and I've never done this with any other EMT skill or anything. I was just wondering if anyone has ever struggled with biting their tongue while performing a skill/procedure in front of a patient/classmate.

If I had a dollar for every time an "oops" slipped out of my mouth doing a procedure when I was newer, well I'd probably have an extra 3-4 bucks a week. It happens... sometimes there is certainly a brain mouth disconnect, particularly when distracted doing a procedure. Experience will help stay your tongue and not feel like your procedure is not going well. Heck, after a while you can even make a mistake look like everything is going as intended. Give yourself a break, mistakes happen, even patients understand (so long as they're minor). Study hard, and practice, practice, practice will help.

Hold something in your teeth but do not use it. It will act as a deterrent to speaking.
Where did my comment about obviously not being married go?;)

I had a little old lady whose vein blew some time after I had the IV running. I checked it to find a big lump of saline under her skin (size of a small apple). Apparently my "Well I'll be damned" didn't serve to comfort her.

Not nearly as bad as being in the middle of a pap smear and accidentally giving a Tim Taylor/Tool Time, "Huh?" when finding something unexpected.

Back when we used to transport CPRs...I had a patient I did NOT expect to come back. 5 min into the transport there was a rhythm change and lo and behold, a pulse. The two first responders in the back with me jaws' dropped when the words out of my mouth were "Sh$t he wasn't supposed to do that!"

That made my day.
