Hi everyone, EMT-B here who just recently turned 21 and is in the hunting for a job in the Bay Area. I've been looking around at different BLS companies and have my eyes set on Pro-transport 1 (SF Station), because of the on call scheduling. The on call scheduling seems like it would work out perfectly me (I'm a college student looking for less than full time hours), but my questions for anyone who has/is working at pro: can I remain as on call employee, or would I eventually have to move to a fixed schedule eventually? Also, I would like to know how many days/hours a week pro requires you to be available. I've looked around the web quite a bit, and I haven't found anything that exactly answers my question. Thanks in advance.

SF MIGHT be different, their contract is available online (NEMSA) but you are on call/per diem so you have a set 3 days you're "on call" so they can schedule you if they want and you HAVE to show up. Other than that you can pick up whatever shifts you want, but depending on seniority you may of my not get them. (You most likely will though).
To maintain PT you have to work (or attempt to work) something like 1 shift a pay period.
Pay sucks compared to other areas though. NEMSA emts make like 10? Starting out. See if a closer area (Marin?) is hiring. The TEMSA folks start at 11.80 and could be more as the current contract is up for negotiation in a couple weeks

I worked at pro SF for a year and a half. You can absolutely stay on call the whole length of your employment, but like Angel said you initially have to have at least three days of availability. You can also pick up shifts that you can work. I left awhile ago, but SF was in Union negotiations with a new union so I am not sure if they have finalized that yet.
