Paramedic responds to wife's car accident

this is one my biggest fears! living in san diego, it's a pretty big party/college town and i have a lot of friends that are still out partying like they are 21 and i know they drive home drunk or on drugs......and i work nights, and on the wknds, so i'm always afraid that one day i'll pull up on scene and i'll be taking a friend to the trauma room......i really don't see these people much anymore, because our lives have gone in different directions, but it would still break my heart if i saw them injured or dead.....

where i live is a pretty small town but we cover a large area. every time i hear a call that goes for my street or my moms or friends street...i always get scared a bit. i am always afraid that i will pull up on a MVA and recognize one of the cars.

About 4 years ago we dispatched for a vehicle roll over. Upon arrival at scene it was my 16 year old daughter's vehicle upside down in the ditch with her trapped inside with the roof caved in. A very traumaic time for a parent. We responded with 3 member's and a driver, one of the other member's with equal training did the primary care as I felt it was the best choice for my daughter as well as me in my emotional state of mind at the time.
She spent 3 day's in the hospital with a concussion , various laceration's fortunatley she had no life threating injuries. I will allways remember that day.

I too live and work in a small community where I have lived and been in business for almost forty years. As such I know a lot of people and a lot of people know me. I have done many calls where the pt or someone in the pts family is someone I know. You deal with it like every other call, professionally. If time and conditions allow you might get to catch up on who's where and doing what now etc. Such as when you are driving a long haul transfer and an old school mate is in the front with you while there parent is in the back.

The closest to home was when my partner and I had to take in my motherinlaw with an altered LOC. Turned out to be viral encephalitis and she didn't die.

I haven't done a major trauma yet with someone I know and I really hope not to.
