A paramedic responding to a call ended up having to be rushed to the hospital when he was struck by a hit-and-run driver Tuesday night.

"At approximately 11:15 this evening, Sunrise Police Department received a call of a person who was shot and who was at the gas station at Hiatus Road and Commercial Boulevard," said Sgt. Roger Torres. "While paramedics were assisting the person who was shot, one of the paramedics was struck by a passing vehicle."

Authorities said crews had shut down Commercial Boulevard to land an air rescue helicopter when the SUV struck the rescue worker. It was unclear if the SUV came from a parking lot or went through the roadblock.

"The paramedic was on Commercial Boulevard and my understanding is they were preparing a landing zone for the person that was injured to be transported to Broward General Hospital," Torres said.

NBC 6's Tina Conte reported that the female driver initially left the scene but returned a short time later and was taken into custody. Police have not said what charges she will face.
