Hello! I have a few questions for anyone working as a paramedic in Alberta Canada. I'm currently going through the Alberta reciprocity process and I'm wondering what the demand is like for medics up there right now? Being American, I'm trying to guage my ability to find job there as I assume most employers will fill positions with available Canadian medics first to avoid work visa hassles.

My understanding is that the oil sands hire on lots of medics during the winter months, how hard is it to land positions that time of year? Will they hire newer medics for those jobs? Have salaries fluctuated much over the last several years? Any info or advice is deeply appreciated!! Thanks

I don't know how involved in work visas the various companies get. They do hire new medics, more so in the winter than summer. I would think if you had a work permit they would consider you.

Good luck on your reciprocity and work permit. If you get them please post back so others will know what steps to take.

Well I just wanted to post back on my experience attempting to gain paramedic reciprocity in Alberta. My goal has been to move up there to be closer to my kid as the long distance thing is hard on her.

I applied back in February for substantial equivalency (I'm NREMT-P in U.S.) The application fee was $650 on top of other costs and the process was very slow with poor communication from the ACOP. They finally got back and said that they placed me at the EMT level with no explanation for the downgrade. Has anyone else had a similar experience with them? Frustrating.
