We are are a fire based EMS agency. Monday thru Friday we have one 8:00-17:00 Paramedic on the clock. We also have our 24 hour medic as well. We are looking at do an "on call" Medic M-F after the hours of 17:00 and 24 hours on the weekend. when I say on call I mean we pay the medic a small wage to be availible. If the medic runs a call they would be paid their full wage during the call. The question is what is a fair "on call" wage?

Thank you in advance.

At my service we are all required to spend at least 36 hours a pay period on call for second out. We get paid $1.50 an hour for each hour of on call, plus once the first out crew goes on a call and we go to the station to cover or run more calls we get paid our full hourly rate and those hours go towards hitting OT (we start OT at 86 hours)

My current agency pays $50 per on-call shift and we are available for on call from 0500-2200. If we get called in to a base, we get the OT, drive time, mileage, and an additional $5/ hr.

It's not a bad deal, got 50 bucks yesterday for sitting at home with the family.

We run our on-call very similar to jpaintball70. The only difference is we are paid $2.50/hour until either our truck or the other truck gets called out, then we go on regular pay.

I work on call often. We pay 3.00/hr for the on call time and then hourly starts when we're called in. We also get a minimum of three hours if we're called in.

It depends on the parameters you must maintain while on call. Do you have to remain within a certain distance of the station? Do you have to keep a department vehicle with you? Personal vehicle? Do you have to remain in uniform?

We would have to remain a certain distance from our department. We would respond to the station in our personal vehicle. We would not have to remain in uniform.

your reply's have been a great help!!

Is this on call like they respond when tones drop? Or do they have like 45 minutes to get there?

If they are pretty much just an on duty medic that isn't at the station, I'd think full wage would be fair.

So what is the criteria for them needing to come to the staton?

In our situation, you have to be able to be at the station within a 10 minute time window. Yes you would have to be in uniform. Respond to station in your personal vehicle. Punch in when you arrive and punch out when you leave.

Oh ok. So like when the green crew gets paged the on call guy comes in?

If they are going to be within 10 minutes, that might be pushing it for 2 bucks an hour. Unless all your people live in town that is. I live 30 minutes away and I would not come to town and have to find a place to stay to make 2 bucks an hour. If I lived 5 or 10 minutes away though, I would do it for 2 bucks an hour.

It think it depends on where all your people live.

All of our FT people are required to live within 8-10 minutes drive from the station. We head into the station when the duty crew goes on a run. Only uniform item we're required to wear while on-call are our dept t-shirts. On duty crews still have to wear full uniforms.

Talk about a slave to the job!

If they want me on call, then they will pay me my full wage the entire time. I do not put my life on hold for them and $1.50 an hour is not gonna cut it.

Heh, I'm figuring this out, hence why I'm trying to find a job in Austin or just move back to NM and finish my RN and then challenge medic.

All full time medics are required to live within 10 minutes!?! Wow! Do you get extra base pay for that?

For us, we are not required to take the on call hours. It is a first come, first serve type of thing. There are a few of us that do this for the love of the job, not just money. The regular scheduled hours are where the main paycheck is earned. The on call hours are nice to pick up for a few extra bucks when we have nothing else going on.

Nope, and actually we're the lowest paid third service in the area. And we don't get OT till after 86, so sometimes we only get our salary pay w/ no OT.

EDIT: L/S, that's exactly the way we work it. Except for the 2.50 part.

Well, if I lived within 10 minutes. I'd probably do it for nothing less than $2.50. I'd also want to get paid my full wage if the other crew is out and I am chilling at the station. As soon as they call back in service, I go back to 2.50. That is just my $0.02.....no pun intended.

I'd want to be paid my regular rate. If I'm being forced to give up my free time to stay within a certain distance of the station, then I better be getting payed my normal rate.

Exactly. Cannot plan trip or even have a beer at home. No thanks. If I want extra money, I will just work an extra shift for OT pay.
