Just thought maybe I could get some feedback from the women. I am having a Hysterectomy on Thursday. I hear good and bad things about recovery. If you have had one can you give me some insight? I'm not real worried about the surgery. I have had two c-sect. and two lapriscopy (not the right word, I call it being detailed, lol). I am however worried about what to do or not to do the first two weeks. And the 6 wk sex thing, is that true?

Um, suzi, you may not be ready for class after the surgery. I've heard the recovery is MUCH worse than a c-section. Last year when I had my appendix out, my roommate at the hospital had had a hysterectomy. For the first day she was still doped up, and on a foley. On the second day it took 10 minutes to get her out of bed, and another 15 to make it from one end of the hospital room to the other where the bathroom was. For at least a month, you probably won't even be able to stand up straight.... This is just what I've heard.

It depends on the method of surgery. Some recovery is quicker than others just because of the difference in invasiveness. The 10# lifting rule will be in effect for at least 2 - 6 weeks but the pain and activity will again vary by the type of surgery and the individual. Your physician will be able to go into great detail as he/she will know your risk for infection and screwing up his/her work.

If you are a lightweight with pain meds, the PCA pump will have you walking from a reclining position or at least you think you are. It is great stuff but if you feel your skin start to crawl away from you, don't panic. Just relax and take your finger off the pump trigger for awhile or ask for a different pain med. The worst will be for the first 24 - 48 hours.

Again, depending on the type of invasiveness, you will probably be able to do your daily household activities, including standing although you may tire easily, that don't involve much lifting after 72 hours. This may vary also by the reason for the surgery and your Hb level at the time of surgery or after. There will be an initial restriction on driving but again that will vary with the type of surgery and pain meds. Since you have had abdominal surgery before you should be familar with the different sensations as the healing process starts. Do the appropriate exercises to stretch and strenghten gently as soon as the surgeon clears you.

OK I will give a little more info. I have SEVERE Endometriosis. My insides are glued together by scar tissue and endo. And its on my back, colon, etc. I am not going back to work before 3 weeks to my reg job but if I get this apprenticeship job for ems before I start school I might have to think about sucking it up. Although, I have told the ems end I am having surgery.
Like I said, not worried about that, already taken care of.
I am definitaly having another c-sect cut over the old one. It's too bad to do vaginally.I do everything in my house, in fact, I decorated for Christmas today because I know I will not be able to later. Myhusband hates doing decor.
I guess my thing is, please tell me I will not have to sit on my tail for 2 weeks and not be able to do anything.

OK, too much information.

Only your body and your physician will be able to determine when it is safe for you to engage in the activities required. Don't over do it or you may end up feeling the consequences for a long time.

Check out www.hystersisters.com

It is a great site, with a lot of information. Of course, sometimes too much information, isn't a good thing.

I registered there 4 yrs. ago and was able to decipher what was pertinent to my situation.

Everyone is different. My mother and grandmother had hella time with theirs. Me on the other hand not so bad. I too had c-sect's and hyster. I was in hosp. for 3 days. On morphine pump first day, used only once. Then requested just tylenol. After I got released I sucked it up for a day, then started my usual house work by day 3 post release (i.e mopping and vac. although I wasn't supposed to) But I agree on one point, watch the lifting thing. It all depends on your pain tolerance.

This post appears at the time I want to remove my uterus with a fork due to cramps. Perfect.

Good luck with your surgery, I obviously still have a uterus so I cant give any advice pertienent other than listen to your doctor and dont fight his or her restrictions.

I know this may be really really gross, but I asked my dr. to take a pic of what they pull out. He said, "You have got to be kidding me" and I said "no, I want to see". He laughphed and said I would be perfect for medic school. lol

Suze,
The quicker you get up after the surgery & start walking the better off you will be. I had mine done at 7:00 am & I made the nurses get me up at 2:00 am that night when I woke up from everything. Also the more you walk the better off you will be. A site that will help is www. hystersisters.com If you need a freind feel free to add me to any of your instant messangers.
