:sad:Ok thus may evoke some feedbackand sorry in advance for using this forum for a moan.
I read that the US emt sysstem is having recruiting problems, Well i am a senior British Paramedic with 20years under my belt who has been trying for the last 3 years to gain recognition by the NREMT of our skills and Training so as to enable me to move with my family to MN where we have relatives.
For those of you that are unaware UK paramedics practice there skills and drug therapy Autonamosly i.e no coms needed with base hospital physicians to give all drugs and treatments including I.O ,ATLS ,needle cric, and Pre hospital Thrombolysis with Heparin chaser.
I have studied the US skill mix and found that it is comparable to our own, we accept US paramedics with a short conversion course usually 1 week to cross over in drug therapy protocols etc so why not the other way round?
The NREMT want multiple tests and months of didactic training at a recognised US college at our own expense before we could even think of applying for a visa.
MN regulatory board have been very helpful but after 3 years of trying, every time it seems that i have reached the final fence the NREMT seem to put another behind it.
Could this be elite'ism not wanting to recognise us as equals in the field of Pre-hospital care?
I cant afford to take that much time off to and also pay all the associated costs !
I eagerly await response, maybe even someone from NREMT reads this and acually does look at the 800 pages of information and training documentation/certification that has been sent to them.

Elitism? HAHAHAHAHA No no no... they just want your money (the NREMT and the schools). If there was ever someone who could justify going to a medic mill, you sound like it.

its all about the money.

There aren't many EMS providers currently hiring, at least not in the Twin Cities.

If you can get your license from the Minnesota EMSRB, you might just be able to explain your situation to a potential employer as to why you don't have NREMT certification.

I've had mixed experiences with the state EMSRB, after my First Responder course they didn't mail out my card for like two and a half months even though I sent them multiple emails and tried calling a couple times. When I finally went to the office in person they had it printed out for me in five minutes, claiming they had misplaced my paperwork.

I am a little bit in the same boat.

The NREMT is not a Government licensing or accreditation body and is a private entity from what I can establish.

In order to be certified as an EMT/Paramedic/whatever you need to complete a DOT approved course (as you said - of some months length) in order to qualify to take the NREMT test; international reciprocity is not really applicable in the US because it's all state level and a bit of a quagmire.

Texas is fairly liberal; you can find a Texas approved college and take your British degree there, maybe do one or two classes and get everything else cross-credited and get a qualification from them. Then you can take the NREMT exam.

Now you may have heard different but a work visa in the US for a Paramedic is virtually impossible because it is not a skill shortage that they can't find US workers for.

One guy I saw online invested like thirty thousand pounds and 5 years and they wouldn't give him a visa.

Best of luck
