Hello all, glad to be a part of this community. As my first post, I had a question regarding EMT occupations without an ambulance drivers cert. Due to an accident about a year ago, I have a feeling the CA DMV will deny me my cert. Has anyone had any experience with a situation like this? Whats the usual wait time and how does the appeals process work? Most importantly, are there any jobs out there that dont require driving or a cert? Thank you very much for your help.

Welcome to EMTLife!

First, I think you need to put this in perspective. Why not call the DMV the first thing in the morning and ask? Heck, you could even call local EMS services and see what they have to say. You don't have to give your name.

I know many private EMS services will allow you to work the rig as a non-driver. It really comes down to supply and demand. You'll need to find a place that is in desperate need of EMTs, and then prove yourself as a dependable employee.

I really think your first job is to find out if you can get a cert. There is no point in worrying over nothing.

If you can't get your ambulance drivers cert, then you'll have to look for services that will hire you as a tech only, or look for other places that hire EMTs that don't require an ambulance drivers cert. Amusement parks, camps, and hospitals often hire EMTs. That may even been a good way to get your foot in the door until you can get your driving cert.

Yes there are, you can work on a air ambulance or become a paramedic...they never drive anyways.

Here in the NWT and Alberta all you need to drive an ambulance is a class 4 driver's licence. You don't need anything else to legally drive an ambulance.
