How many of you live in cities that participate in the annual "National Night Out"? If so, do you feel like it has a real impact on public safety in your communities?
My wife and I spent a couple of hours at the event in our city and I felt it went really well (other than the horrible band...well, the singer was horrible anyway). A lot of what we saw was geared for kids, but that helps get the parents out and involved I think. I got to get some face time with different EMS providers in our city and county, everything from the volunteer rescue squad to the county special ops team (many who have been through the course that I'm taking and gave me some prep help). The highway patrol showed up in force and had a vehicle rollover simulator consisting of a pickup cab on a spinner with a dummy inside....LOL. There were also parts of the city police, sheriff's office, fire department, and some other agencies. I don't know if the event itself is much of a crime deterrent, but it is nice to see families coming out to meet the people charged with protecting their neighborhoods.
