How many of you live in cities that participate in the annual "National Night Out"? If so, do you feel like it has a real impact on public safety in your communities?

My wife and I spent a couple of hours at the event in our city and I felt it went really well (other than the horrible band...well, the singer was horrible anyway). A lot of what we saw was geared for kids, but that helps get the parents out and involved I think. I got to get some face time with different EMS providers in our city and county, everything from the volunteer rescue squad to the county special ops team (many who have been through the course that I'm taking and gave me some prep help). The highway patrol showed up in force and had a vehicle rollover simulator consisting of a pickup cab on a spinner with a dummy inside....LOL. There were also parts of the city police, sheriff's office, fire department, and some other agencies. I don't know if the event itself is much of a crime deterrent, but it is nice to see families coming out to meet the people charged with protecting their neighborhoods.

we don't...but then again you would be stupid to commit a crime in a town where everyone is armed.

i never even heard of it

The idea has really caught on and in Minneapolis - Saint Paul there are block parties all around the cities. The idea is to increase a sense of community among neighbors.
Here is a link to the national website.

Philly Fire had an issue last week when they went to put mascots onto one of their rigs to bring them to a National Night Out event.

Because no one was hurt... we can laugh at the true FIRE truck.

Oops!!! I guess it's a crime/drug/SAFETY awareness night for them next year!

I need to do some follow up with our local rescue squad. They tried to recruit me on the spot, but I'm not so sure it's a good idea for me to volunteer before I even set foot in the classroom. I don't want to get distracted from my studies.

Is it possible to pull off a full time job, EMT school, and still volunteer for a rescue squad? Thoughts?

I think this night out thing is a great idea and I wish they did it in my area

Thoughts on having a full time job EMT school and volunteering? It is possible but sometimes it can get to be a real handful, you might want to wait a little wile to volunteer until you know how you will handle the load from class and work. I was able to do it but in the end I felt more burned out then I needed to be.
