Hi all,
I'm new here and this is my first post. I got my NREMT cert a little more than a month ago, top of my class, aced every exam/practical. I am having trouble getting experience in the field, though. I have shadowed nurses/ALS techs in ER'S around the local area and today just finished an air crew ride along shift. I haven't been able to see much of anything, let alone practice any skills. I've spent approx. 30 hours shadowing/ doing ride alongs, and the most exciting thing I've been able to do is feel a pt's vein as a nurse flushed an IV. I spent the past 12 hours at the air crew base hoping to get a call, not a single one came. Even during clinicals for class, my nurse just wrote down vitals for my patient contacts. I didn't actually "make contact" with any of them, and some of them I didn't even get to see. I know ems isn't all adrenaline rush, but is this a typical experience? I may be impatient, but I'm getting pretty discouraged. I got my cert, I wanna actually do stuff now!
I'm scheduled for another ride along shift with a ground crew in about a week, hopefully I'll have better luck then.

You want experience, you need to get a job in the field, even if all it is in dialysis transfers. And you did yourself a disservice for letting the nurse pencil whip your paperwork. In fact you should have been made to do it all again.

Thank you both for your responses. My instructor recommended doing as many ride along shifts as possible before actually settling on a job. I'll see what this next ems service is like and if they accept applications.

You're an EMT, it's not like your vetting a career destination. EMTs are entry level employees. Just get a job and go to work.
