Hi everyone,
I am currently an EMR student at Nait in Edmonton, Alberta.
I talked to a person at nait when considering this career and was told I did not need a drivers lisence in order to take the emr and emt programs. Turns out I do for the emt? It is not listed in the prerequisites but it is mentioned that a "drivers lisence" (?) is needed when applying for the program. What drivers lisence is this?
I currently have my Learners (just got it this month) - I even told the many different people I talked at Nait that I was just obtaining my learners and they said this would be fine.... do I need to wait a year now until I get my class five gdl in order to do the emt schooling? My emr course ends soon... where will I work with just my learners until then? My plan was to do the emr and emt and by then I should have the drivers lisence - class 5, class 4 - that I see in all the job ads. In the job ads, they say class 5 is needed in most... is a gdl okay?
I don't know who to talk to now as I get so many different opinions...
Can anyone help please?

EMTs tend to drive its part of the job.

That said I know some IFT places hire non drivers.

Ofcourse - my plan was that I would have the needed drivers lisences once I finished my schooling.

I have always been asked for a DL # for background checks and certification papers. Thats the U.S. though I'm not sure about Canada.

Is a drivers lisence always needed for EMT training?
You are saying, considering my situations, I can work in an IFT? place as an emr until I get my drivers lisence?

I didn't say that. I said I have heard of companies in the U.S. who hire non-drivers.

You need to talk to the specific companies your looking at about it. Personally it makes no sense to employ someone who can only attend patients and not drive the truck as well.

I'd be pissed if my partner couldn't drive.

I was hired as a non-driver.. but only because I was too young for the insurance. I still had a DL tho.
