Hi, my names mike I just found this forum. I just finished EMT-B in Florida a few weeks ago, and am hoping that I can move on to paramedic in January.

I have somewhat of a situation and I wanted to ask for advice:

This class ended on August 11th. I passed the skills test and the final, filled out my state and nremt applications and sent in the app. fee, and also sent in my copy of class completion and cpr card. I think that is everything I needed to do to get approved to take the nremt.

The problem I have is that registration for paramedic is Sept. 10 which is a little over 2 weeks away. All I need to get accepted into paramedic is proof that I passed the test, which I think I get right after I pass the test? Unfortunatly the paramedic classes have been filling up quickly and if I don't make it into this one I will have to wait almost a year until I can get into another one.

So my questions are, how long does it usually take to get in to test? Is there any way to speed up this process? Has anyone else ran into this problem?

Any advice would be very appreciated. Thanks.

Mike

Took me 2 weeks for my teacher to send the info in to the NR and it getting verified.

That's somewhat of a refreshing response. I hope mine is that quick. I went in to my school yesturday and asked the program director and my instructer. One said 2/3 weeks, and one said 6 weeks. I'm really stressing it ya know, I can't afford to miss this opportunity.

Talk to the school you're planning on going to for medic, and see if you can enroll with the promise you'll pass your basic.

There is a woman in my medic class who was taking basic at the same time as taking medic. If she failed basic, she'd be let go of medic. She obviously passed basic.

The school I took basic is the same as medic (community college). With the promise of passing basic the only thing I can do is submit an application but I wont get into the class if the class fills up; they take people who are certified before those who aren't.

Of course once I pass the test I just have to go in and they will check online to see I passed and put me in the class.

I wish I could have done what the women in your class is doing. We can't even take the two classes back-to-back. You have to wait an entire semester before taking medic. That's a lot of time that the training I have is slipping out of my head. It's a screwed up system

We have to wait an entire year here.

What the hell?

Yup. Tacoma CC's Paramedic course requires as a pre-req that you are a current certified EMT with 1 yr experience, plus letters from your agency and superiors confirming performance, number of contacts, etc, before admission.

I do believe that the one year EMT requirement is a WA state department of health mandate. You must also be associated with a licensed EMS agency prior to receiving certification in the state of WA. I have always said WA is the oddball when it comes to its licensing and certification of providers and I don't see it changing anytime soon.

Hello

Well, first off, welcome!

Second, it normally takes 7 to 10 days for you to get your results for your EMT cert. Talk to your instructor and they may be able to help you speed up the process.

That's not what I was told last night. Besides how would you get in with an agency without certification? Doesn't make sense. We're testing at the state level then for NR after classes finish. They didn't say anything about a requirement of being associated with someone before we could do so.

You can go fire with many different volunteer agencies with your CPR/BLS card. I have been certified for ten years and there has always been an agency association rule. Maybe you need to double check your source, I do think you may be able to hold national registry but how are you going to use it unless you have an agency association? Sorry if it does not make sense but thats the way it is unless you have some sort of special deal going with the WA state DOH.

Yep. It really sucks. Being as I want to go paramedic, I view this year required as a huge roadblock for me. But I'll get there eventually.

Uh, find another school than. There is no way in a frozen hell that it should take your EMT class a year to get information to the NREMT.

I just double checked and I hate to be the skunk at your garden party my friend, but if you go to the WA state DOH site and look at item four on the checklist for initial EMT certification it clearly states that you must have an affiliation with an approved EMS agency. You may be able to take the test but your dead in the water as far as getting your application approved until you find an agency to work or volunteer for. You may want to pass this information on to your source. It has been this way for at least ten years and is a real pain for some providers.

I'm sorry, I don't think I came across clearly. You have to have a year as an active EMT before you can get into medic school.

Thank you Level1, I will take that to my instructor.

same with california... i thought everywhere required you to be a working EMT for at least one year before applying to medic school.
