Hi everyone, just joined today, first post.

I am currently a student in South Florida for EMT (well soon to be student, course starts next month). Was hoping to get some questions answered. My goal once I finish this course (6 months) is to move back to New Jersey (Central), look for work and go back to school for Paramedic. I know in Florida you must go through the Fire Academy as well. To my knowledge this is different in N.J., you can just be an Emt/Paramedic. Is there a test I can take where I will not have to take any other training in N.J.? What is the job market like up there now? And will I be able to work on an Ambulance in N.J. without F.D. training.

Thanks and I look forward to your answers.

NJ is known more for its volunteer basic services than paid. May be a challenge with only basic education to get a job and if you do pay is low.

Make sure and check if Florida and NJ have an agreement so your certification be moved.

Thanks for the quick response. Getting the immediate job itself in NJ isn't the biggest problem if I can get right into a paramedic program.

I am searching the net right now and having a little trouble to see. Based on what I have read so far I would just take the National Exam instead of the Florida Exam, but whether or not NJ takes my training I cannot find.

I would just take the National Exam instead of the Florida Exam,

There's no state Florida EMT exam, once you pass the NREMT-B in Florida, you'll recieve your registry card and your state card (although seperately and slower than molasses.)

Ok thanks. :)

May want to call NR as well as the NJ certifying board. Get accurate info so you do not make a mistake and have more delays.

I don't know how NJ OEMS feels about FL certs and giving reciprocity with out an additional class, to my knowledge you would probably have to take the core 13, a 24 hour refresher class and the state EMT exam.. Might want to Private Message BLSBoy, as he may know something about that... Most newbie EMT jobs in NJ are transport companies. The companies that run 911 want usually at least 2 years paid or 911 experience be considered. But once you do have your NR you would go to www.njoemscert.com create an account, then the first screen after you long on shows the link for the reciprocity application.

The Job Market is over saturated with EMTs, yet there is a shortage of good EMTs for paid 911 and volly EMTs.
Most 911 services are not Fire based

Where in Central NJ were you thinking about moving back to?

I will be living in the Howell/Freehold area.

Well just confirmed with the State of NJ that all I will need to take along with completion of my National Registry Exam is a Refresher course in NJ.
