Hey guys, well I found this site and wanted to just be a part of this community since I feel it will bring me a lot of insight and guidence, and possible, I can contribute myself soon.

Little about myself, I'm 23 and from California (orange county area) and I have been working on all my pre-req courses for D.O. school and just finished them all up last semester when I decided I dont wanna be a doctor anymore. And no not because of poor grades but because its just not what I wanted to do (long story). Soooooo I have decided to become an EMT and continue on trying to help and serve my community by other means. I am looking into becoming a CRNA down the road and figure while I wait for everything I can start getting my hands dirty now. I'm very good with people and have a great attitude so I'm sure thats all I need to be successful. I'm taking my 7 week course next month as I also finish my MicroBio class and O-Chem II course, so I should have my hands full. I dont care where I work or what I do, just as long as I know what I am doing is helping. I'm not coming into this thinking I will be working on people like they have 2min left to live, I know how it really is. But ANY advice from all you guys would be G R E A T. I.E. School advice, what I should expect, job, job finding, ect. ect. ect.

Thanks guys!

Quick advice. EMS some of us are good natured but a bit brutal with the truth/our opininon. Dont let anyone set you off, and realize they some people are just venting.

We all have our soft spots. hit one and you get yelled at. but thats pretty much everyone.

It sounds like a long story i would like to hear.

Welcome!

Welcome to the tribe!!! I think it is great you want to start a career in EMS, since you have a strong back round in pre med, I would look into a college paramedic program. This a great site for information and ideas! :)

I will be attending a EMT-I course, I'm sure I probably would like to take another course to further my knowledge later. As far as not wanting to go to DO school, reason is pretty simple yet complicated i guess. I always wanted to be a MD and after spending so much time talking to doctors and friends in DO school and such, I just dont want the hassel of having patients. I like my free time and I dont want to be bothered everyday after work having to deal with people, I know when I'm young I wont care, but when I get older i'm sure I will get over it. Another reason is the cometition to get into a DO program is crazy, an example is Western Health Science school in Pomona Ca: Req to get in is a BS degree and all pre reqs, MCAT is NOT required, but 100% of the students have taken the MCATS and received a 14 out of 15 score on it. I want to stay in Ca while i'm in school and dont want to move out of state or have to go to the carab. So that is the reason for no go on DO school, maybe to some of you that isnt a good enough reason, but for me it is. anyways.........

If you want to be a CRNA (which is a great profession) figure getting your BSN and at the least five years nursing experience (preferred surgery, CCU, not ER or field). The entry point is brutal for CRNA schools, and very limited upon the number of applicants allowed. Most are at the least three years in length and one usually cannot work while in school, but some do offer a stipend.

Welcome to the site, good luck!
