Hi every one, i recently moved to San Diego to pursue my career. What are some of the basic things i need to know such as local hospitals and specialized hospitals, Local protocol for the emt scope of practice too please. I had an Interview with Rural metro that i dropped hte ball on because i didnt know emts were allowed to maintain an IV if it was flowing Glucose or an isotonic saline solution.

If you all could help me compile a list or cheat sheet with some nned to know information i would greatley appreciate it.

Any advice on interviews would be well taken too, i still get the jitters whenever i go in for one. Thank you,

Nick

If you don't know, at the county EMS office there is a protocol book that you can buy for $10. It has a nice list of pretty much everything you asked.

I did not, Thank you!

You can find the protocols in PDF format on this page

I find the book is easier to study out of, and nice to have on hand because they have a list of all the hospital's phone numbers if you can't reach them on the radio

Your base hospitals are going to be:
Sharp Grossmont
Sharp Memorial
Scripps Mercy
Palomar
Scripps La Jolla
Tri-City
UCSD

All of the base hospitals except for Grossmont and Tri-City are Level I trauma centers. Rady's Childrens hospital is also a Level I

Your burn center is UCSD, they also have a hyperbaric chamber.

The rest you need to know, you'll find in the book. Once you're solid with your BLS protocols and you land a job, start studying your ALS protocols if you're planning on going to medic school around here. That book is your bread & butter for school.
