Ok..So I went to school in Orange county Ca. got certified, passed the national registry and am getting ready to talk the dmv ambulance drivers test.I am thinking about relocating to San Diego Ca. but have no idea what if any obstacles I will run into if any..So if anyone can give me any advice on what will make it easier or what I can do to be better prepared to try to find a job.

I would really appreciate it..

Thanks Gary

Hey,

I'm in San Diego as well. I'm in somewhat a similar situation; about to take the national registry exam this Saturday and going to get all my other paperwork done within the following weeks.

I think you just missed the latest hiring wave at Rural/Metro (they hold the 911 contract for San Diego County). Not sure when's the next wave coming around (I looked on their website and they only have openings for Pacific Ambulance - which they also own). I heard it's hard to get hired with R/M straight out of school (it's not impossible, just difficult - I think they prefer EMTs with previous experience).

To share the advice that was given to me; get all your paperwork in, and start applying to every BLS company. San Diego has a lot of BLS companies, but like any other big city; there's an over-saturation of available EMTs. You might not get a job over at R/M, but there are plenty of BLS companies in the county. I was looking on Craigslist the other day, and saw that Balboa and Care (different from the Care Ambulance in LA/OC area) are hiring. If I recall correctly; Balboa, Care, and Pacific are the next "big 3" BLS companies after R/M. So if you can get a gig at those 3, you're "set" until R/M is hiring again.

Here's a link of some of the Ambulance companies here in SD (some, not all):

And here's a more comprehensive link (shows all Ambulance dispatching companies in the county and fire departments - some surrounding counties might hire EMTs - not exactly sure):

Good luck, bro!

Thanks for the links will definitely look though those when its time to apply..

I agree I am trying to get all my paperwork right.I just dont know if what I have will transfer over from Orange county to San Diego..I dont know what else I will need certification, national registry,I will have a ambulance drivers lic.got all my shots done the livescan will get a medical examiners card before the dmv test.I cant think of anything else..

Thanks for the info on Care I say them online the other day and was wondering if they were the same as LA/OC..

dCOM..good luck on your national registry...

They hold the 911 contract for San Diego city, not the whole county.
