Hi I'm new to the boards and have a few questions. I'll be taking an EMT-B class starting in January and was wondering what to expect. I currently work as a 911 dispatcher so I have a general idea of what is expected. I was curious to know what is usually involved in the classes, clinicals, etc. Also I previously worked as a CNA and was wondering if this might help me out in the EMT class. I'm really excited to start this new journey and my life and know it will help not only my advance in a career but to be a great role model for my son and others. If you have any advice on what I should be focusing on or books to read I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks everyone!^_^

What not to expect should be more the question. Your experience as in the CNA course will assist you but they are different in focus and methods of teaching.

Basic EMT is just little more than Advanced First-Aid. Nothing more. It is designed to train a person to give immediate care to a victim for the first few minutes. Very little to no true medical or in-depth is to be expected as it is not there.

It is also designed to entice and hopefully encourage you to continue your medical training as it is again just the first tiny step in becoming a health care professional.

Good luck,

IMO you already have a huge head start as a CNA in A&P and some of the Illness/Disease alone. I can't speak for your program, but in mine we had a ton of hands on skills. You may just need to learn field pt assessment and how to use the tools. Good luck to you! You'll probably do really well.
