I have the joy of being elected to the post of training officer of our vol. BLS squad.
In the past our trainings have consisted of a power point on cardiac issues, diabetes etc, all stuff word for word out of the EMT B text book. They are boring and nobody shows up for them. As far as I am concerned, if you took the EMT class and have a card, it is your duty to keep that info fresh in your head. And if your showing up for calls on a regular basis, it should be.
I want to do trainings on subjects that we dont hit very strongly in class and refresher classes. Some ideas that I have are having the state police come out from the local barracks and talk about crime and accident scene preservation, having the County dept of Social Services out to talk about signs of child, spouse and elder abuse. Have someone talk about suicides, the signs of them, talking someone down, the dangers those PTs pose to EMTs and dealing with the family. One of the sexual assault nurses from the ER to talk about those cases.
What are some of the non text book trainings that your agency has done that you found to be useful and interesting?
