Hello i am 22 and passed the nremt about 6 months ago i dont have a real pretty driving record (alot of speeding tickets the last one was over a year ago) but i went into the classes knowing that it would make it harder to find a job for a while. Needless to say it has been 6 months and can NOT find any hospital job for an emt-b ANYWHERE in florida. I am looking nationaly now and am ready to move out of florida. Are there any other areas that anyone knows of that has a high demand for emts or is this problem everywhere. Are all departments very strict on driving records?
Thanks in advance

every guy in my family has been firefighters and i planned on doing the same but as i was doing my emt classes i decided that i liked that side of it and want to do paramedic school as soon as i can get a emt-b job to get a liitle money saved up for the school. But that seems to be a way bigger problem than i was planning on haha

Find a hospital that does use ER techs and see what their requirements are. Then look at the other job opportunities on the board at that hospital. Find another entry job if the ER Tech position is not available at that time. You may have to get another cert as a CNA, PCT and/or phlebotomist or EKG tech. If you want to do patient care, it shouldn't matter. It will give you an insight on patient care and anything you learn will be a plus on down the road. Don't limit yourself to just "EMT-B".

Get established and once that position opens up, you'll be in. In the mean time you can take classes, preferably at a college that will put you on the path to being a Paramedic or whatever if you want to be part of health care.

The FDs will be a bigger problem for you to get into since they have 1000s of applicants for each hiring and almost everyone of them is a Paramedic with a good driving record.

I was told that an emt can challange the cna cert test is that true?

NO.

There is very little taught in the EMT course that will be helpful as a CNA. You will not do yourself any favor and will look like a fool on your first day if you even make it through an interview.

And, most CNA programs are longer than the EMT.

I firmly believe that it is not worth it to move to a random location for an EMT-Basic job. If you're looking to move, then of course look for jobs in the area, but I've found that moving to a random location for an EMT-Basic or any similar low paying job just isn't worth it.

If I were in your shoes I would:
1. Evaluate going back to Paramedic school. It really isn't that expensive, and you can definitely work part time while doing it. You don't need to have an EMT job in order to finance your education. Get a job and go back to school.
2. Evaluate other career options - CNA is definitely one, though the job is far different than being an EMT.
3. Move - Move somewhere for an EMT-Basic job, but I think you'll have a hard time finding anything that you'd really love at this point. It's a tough job market.

If I were in your shoes I'd go right on to Paramedic school. It's a tough year or two, but is worth it in the end. Make a sacrifice now so you can be relatively happier and wealthier later.

Good luck!

yeah i really dont want to do the cna thing and i am more than likely going to do paramedic school but on the other hand finding ANY job in sw florida is about impossible so i really dont mind moving im young and could always come back down the road if i needed too

So why not CNA? It will give you lots of hands on patient care experience and it isn't just about nursing homes.

Being a Paramedic is about patient care. Many enter the field and really do not have much experience interacting with people as patients. Working a BLS truck doesn't really give you a lot of hands-on time or people skills either. You can see more patients as a CNA in one week than many EMTs will seen in a month or 6 months.

Your opportunities as an EMT-B will be about the same everywhere since it is an easy entry level job where there are few requirements. You have competition from people who just want to try it out for the thrill of it but run away when patient care is involved.
