I am wrapping up my EMT-B course in WA state on Aug 12, 2010. We already took our final written exams and our final practical trauma scenarios today. We just have our final practical medical scenarios to complete.

Our course instructor requires that we get a 80% or better in the class as a whole and a 80% or better on the final written exam to receive our certification certificate allowing us to take our state or national exams.

On the final exam I received a 76% and will be getting around a 89% (I pretty much know my final class score because the only thing left is our final practical medical scenario, my percentage may be higher depending on how I do) in the class.

I am very willing to take the course over, but before I fork out another grand and spend another 130 hours retaking the course I am wondering what my options are.

What are my options? Do I just have to take the course over again? Im really frustrated at the moment and any advice and suggestions are truly appreciated.

Thanks

The only one who can answer that is your course instructor, who also has the option to let take the state and regional exam. And you might consider asking if there's something you could do as extra-credit to boost you the 4 points. Begging sometimes works as well, but don't grovel. But in any case, prepare yourself (for failure as well as for suggestions and possibilities) and TALK to her!

congrats for getting a good score !!

Instructors want the students to pass. it makes them look good.. They will do everything in there power to make that happen.. including the Nat'l test. That's what counts the most..
The teachers job is to make the student ready for the Nat'l test. By making the class hard and doing the 80% thing on all the class tests and skills, they make you having a better chance at passing the NREMT test...

Find out what areas you need studying in. and bone up on those. then ask to take a retake of the class test..

I have yet to meet an EMT B instructor who wants a student to fail... at the same time.. make sure you know the material for the nat'l test...
good luck...

i got a 77 on my NR emt-b (some years back now). my DH was top of his Medic class with no studying. even he said, as instructor did, do your best on them tests so you can pass. then get out in the rig and really learn!

i agree with above poster about instructor will help. i think you can re-take the test a second time? not sure whats changed over time.

i remember my early days in the fire service. on the way to the call whilst pulling on my gear, i seemed to always scream at my LT., "tell me what to do when we get there!"

*chuckle*

Extra credit..not on a final exam...nononono. But, is there no retake options with a score between 75 and 80? As long as a student goes into a final with a grade of 80% or above, there should be a second final exam option for a simple reason; EMS licensing tests almost universally require 70% as a passing score. 80% is a "above the bar" number commonly used by schools to predict which students may pass their licensing exams the first time. As we all know, schools are measured by thier first-time pass rates. Good luck and hang in there.

You guys were right, I did get to take a second test, but I scored a 77% on it...

The only obstacle I have for taking the National Exam is getting a certification code or whatever its called to apply for the test. My instructor doesn't award them unless you pass the course with a 80% and have a 80% on the final exam, thats my problem. Is there anyway I can get a certification?

Instructor has to give you the permission to sit the NREMT - no way around that comes to my mind. Ask for one more retake, but if you don't get your 80 then it might be for the best to do a refresher or repeat. Study and study more. Do your online tests if they are available.

Im here in WA too, and an EMT - B taking the test under the new rules. And ya, retakes are the only option and given by the instructor. I think with ours they gave 2 retakes, maybe 3 for some of those that were close I cant recall. But you pretty much have to have that Pass from the county / class level before you can take the NREMT.

We have had a few people that had to retake the class and did much better anyways. So you probably have the option of retake and it all depends on "WHAT" you want to do with it and your future if its worth it to you. You cant do much in WA state without EMT in the fire service / transports or anything. most agencies require the emt before you can even drive.

Do all depends on what you want to do in the future.

Good luck

Honestly, and I'm not trying to sound rude, but, perhaps a retake is a good option. Would you want to know that whoever is trying to save your life did not know the material well enough to get above a C average? That's a lot of information to lose and a lot of protocols to forget. It may do you good to go through things again and take the time to reassess what you missed. Tests are a sterile environment without much variation, yet, you will never get a text book patient in the field and knowing the information backwards and front will help you in those questionable moments. I got straight A's in scenarios and tests and still end up with questions. I would challange you to find what is making you weak here and focus focus focus. (Oh and take their shoes off! I failed trauma first run for not piping up and reminding my partner to check pedal pulses LOL).
