Hey everyone!

I'm starting EMT school in January and going straight through to Paramedic. I would like to get a good idea from you guys what sort of qualifications I should work on to come out as a good candidate for employment after EMT I. Heres what I have so far...

Volunteer FF 1 year (5 years ago so its irrelevant IMO)
CNA II with ED experience at my hospital.
American Heart BLS Instructor

I'm checking into volunteering at a search and rescue group but I doubt I'll get in. Most of the local volunteer fire departments say they are filled. I might try to volunteer a larger area. Also IF I can I'm going to take the ACLS class offered at my hospital, but currently its only open to nurses/paramedics.

Also I am going to check into enrolling into the fire college here for the extra bump. Any more thoughts on what I can do while I'm in school? Thanks.

Don't stretch yourself too thin for starters. Focus on doing well in school or no matter what else you do, it won't matter for much.

Judging by the designation, I'm guessing you're in California? That means you're in the most oversaturated state for EMS employment in the entire nation. Your prior experience will give you a slight advantage but don't get your feelings hurt if you don't find work straight out of school.

Like usaf said, don't stretch yourself too thin. Focus on one profession at a time and hone your skills in that one first before moving onto others.

In this job market, the most important thing to come out of paramedic school with is a solid base of knowledge. You should be focusing on A&P, chemistry, pharmacology, writing, and all the other essentials outside of the other knowledge you'll need. Focus on becoming a competent provider first, then look at other certifications. Don't forget, the job market is still pretty saturated, so don't get discouraged if you don't get hired right away.
