ERSEY CITY — Authorities continued to search for a missing police officer Monday, the morning after another officer was killed when their emergency-squad truck plunged 45 feet from an open drawbridge and into a frigid river.

The officers on Sunday night had crossed over the Lincoln Highway Bridge, which links Jersey City and Newark, and had placed flares nearby to warn motorists that it was having trouble operating, said police Chief Robert Troy.

This is really tragic. Both officers were pretty young, and they were out literally trying to help keep others safe.

What caused them to crash? Were there safety measures in place? I assume they were not working..

They were working - they were out in fog setting up road flares and closing the road because the drawbridge stop/go lights were malfunctioning - apparently while they were crossing back over the bridge it too malfunctioned and went up and they plunged into the river.

I read this a few days back. This is awful. Hope their families get great support.

Nooooooooo... I didn't mean that the officers weren't working, I was asking about the warning system on the bridge.

What I've read is that there was some sort of accident and they were closing off the bridge. The warning gate, lights and bell had been broken for 2 days, they drove up, past the lights, past the gate, and went off... the bridge is a 2-post type elevator bridge. The bridge had been raised for a boat, and they couldn't see it in the dense fog.

Did they ever find the second officer's body??
