Hey everyone! Well it looks like I may be moving to NC in the very near future. I currently am NREMT Texas cert, basic. Have had 0 luck finding a job here in ATX or SA for that matter. But my husband (bread winner) is looking at taking a job in the Raleigh area. I have looked online for reciprocity info but not having much luck, also if anyone knows of any refresher courses in that area , also a list of ambulance companies that will hire newbs with no experience. This has seemed to be a big issue here in ATX , most places want at least one year experience or more. I have been out of school since early may and I feel like I have already forgotten so many things. So I would love a refresher once I get where I'm going. All input is appreciated! Thanks!

What companies have you looked at in ATX and SA? Most private companies could care less about your experience. Acadian (SA and ATX), metro, and southern cross are almost always hiring. And if you live in Austin, ATCEMS is now hiring basics, so might be worth trying to wait for them to hire. From my understanding, they're going to start putting basics through an in-house paramedic program, promoting from within.

I can't help you with NC though...

Been there and done that with all of the above. Went to school at Acadian campus, interviewed etc. was told along with others from my class that they only had 24 hr trucks with no bunk time during shift, which I now realize is illegal.
ATC is again hiring but the program is ridiculous to try to get into. Did my clinical rides with them . They are a great group of people but , that's as far as I will comment.
I have also looked in SA and at Southern cross, husband is not happy about me traveling almost 2 hours for a job and the gas involved to get there.
But with moving its all moot now.
I'm not the only one looking and frustrated. But with a move coming up I will be starting all over again. I'm about ready to give it all up before I get a chance to get started.

Thanks! I've been looking at all of that online. I would for now like to get at least a year experience as a basic before I consider EMT-P . Need to be a good basic before I can become a good medic.

Why? You learn all of it again in medic school. There's not some magic skill set you only learn as a basic. And you're much more marketable as a medic....

Advice from friends that have been medics for 30+ yrs. always been told I need to be a good basic before I can be a good medic. Been told that those that jump in without experience don't do so well.
And at this point in my life I'm not so sure I want to go the medic route anyway. I'm a mature adult and at some point in the next 10 yrs I'm hoping for grandchildren to spoil. :D

Biggest line of bull ever, but to each their own I guess. Most of the best medics I know went straight through and have had zero problems. Best of luck either way though :)

what was so crazy about getting into atcems just curious?

I'm wondering that too, as it's one of my three dream services (along with DG in Denver, and Wake County in NC)

ATC isn't that bad. The test is supposed to be a little more difficult than registry, and there's a decent physical test. If you're fairly competent, you shouldn't have a problem.

The problem now is talk that they are supposedly going to be hiring very few medics in the next few years. They are apparently switching to medic/basic and will only be hiring basics in the foreseeable future.

I felt as if the process was very well organized and not terribly difficult at all but that was 3 years ago when I was hired, can you elaborate on what was so difficult?

Have not gotten that far yet in the process, just submitted everything this weekend. Must say I am just intimidated by the whole process of testing etc. I realize they need to be this way and it's fine, but it has been a deterrent for me. I am not a paramedic, just a basic. So it's all new to me. However I absolutely love doing my clinicals with them! My absolute fave is Medic 13 :D I was more comfortable with them for some reason. Still thinking about writing them a nice Thank you letter and dropping it by, they were great about answering my questions and showing me everything. Though I never had any issues with any of the crews I was with my second fave was D1. So if ya know these places most likely you know the folks I'm referring to. I will say I would completely trust any of them with my life though I truly hope it never comes down to that.

Tx medic not sure how to do a pm on here yet. Will try to figure it out. I'm new to the site so unsure.
