This is the one thing that we haven't skimped on quality. Granted, there are now other parts of EMS in the county that needs some work but our HEMS is still pretty decent.

On Tuesday, Local 10’s Todd Tongen rode along with Miami-Dade Air Rescue South, an operation that has already implemented most of the NTSB's recommendations, making them among the safest air rescue teams in the nation. They have flown 1,800 flights a year for nearly 25 years without a single crash.

“We have a two-pilot operation, which makes our operation much safer,” said Chief of Special Operations Ray Barreto.

The crew also has a proactive maintenance program. Six aircraft technicians work year-round to keep their five helicopters flying safely.
