Whats up all, new to the forum, just wondering if anyone has any tips for me about paramedic school. First a brief history. I was in the USMC for 8 years where I was a grunt/scout sniper, got out in 2010, was fortunate enough to go to field med school while I was in. I went to nursing school for 3 years but decided that nursing wasn't for me. I just passed BLS school and I'm taking my state exam on June 20th. I plan to go to ALS school in September. Any input would help, and I thank you all in advance.

I don't really have any advice to give, but I'm curious about your choice to switch from nursing to EMS. It seems like 99% of the time people go the opposite direction and switch from EMS into nursing/other hospital-based careers.

Could you speak to this at all? You must have really thought nursing would be a good fit for you if you did 3 years of school before stopping. What made you change your mind?

Honestly, I started doing my clinical work and just kind of felt couped up, if that makes any sense. I am a front line kind of guy, I would prefer to be more active and be outside. I mean, there's always the option to go back into nursing, or maybe PA school. But for now, I'm still young and I think my skill set is makes me more of an asset in the EMS field.

So you went to field medical school when you were in the Corps? I thought it was just to teach Navy Corpsmen how to function in the field and familiarize them with the Marine Corps way of doing things. I never heard of any Marines going through it, Interesting.

When you say you went through BLS school you mean EMT school, and by ALS you mean Paramedic school?

yes BLS=EMT and ALS=Medic. As I said I was fortunate enough to go to field med school because, as i previously said that I am a scout sniper, and at the time there weren't enough Corpsman that were up to par to work on a sniper team, so they sent a few snipers to medic school to "fill the void". So I jumped at the chance.

Welcome
I went through 2 .5 years of nursing plus summer session classes before I switched to EMS. I had a 3.4 GPA and was doing well in my clinicals but it just didn't feel right.I do not regret my decision. I think the experience has made me a better paramedic. For a little while I considered going back to finish it be realized I could put in the same amount of work and gt my pa.
I now work In A clinic setting so that has helped a lot. Will be applying to PA schools in the next year or 2.

Hey, thanks for the input, so you know EXACTLY how I felt. I too have a similar long term plan. Good luck with PA school brother!

Also I should have included that, I didn't go to basic field med school (Corpsman school) It was much more advanced. Included laryngoscopy, phlebotomy, anesthesia administration. From what I understand it was very close to medic school accept for the pharmacology.
