I have just received my EMT certification and will have my ambulance certificate soon. Does anyone know of any companies that may be hiring? SF/North Bay/East Bay/South Bay? Thanks!

in this instance the search feature will be your best guide, theres a ton of great information in older threads which, for the most part is still accurate.

in short, companies are always accepting applications and you should apply everywhere.

I'll give that a shot thank you

Like Angel said, apply everywhere you can. It used to be really hard to get an EMT job in the bay area, but I think it has been getting easier lately since I see a lot of people getting hired that are fresh from EMT school. It's still extremely difficult to get hired on into a company that exclusively does 911 or to be able to transfer to their 911 division if they have one even if you have several years of experience though so do not be surprised if you do not get on with 911.

-----------------

911 Providers

In Contra Costa County, AMR is the 911 provider.

In Alameda County, Paramedics Plus is the 911 provider. I believe you have to be hired into their IFT/BLS division called Patient Plus first. I also hear that has minimized.

In Santa Clara County, County Ambulance (operated by Rural/Metro) is the 911 provider. They have an IFT division that does go by the name of Rural/Metro that is completely separate from 911. So if you apply for a job, the San Jose location is 911, and the Milpitas location is IFT.

In Sonoma County, Sonoma Life Support (operated by AMR Santa Rosa) is the 911 providder.

In San Mateo County, AMR is the 911 provider.

San Francisco is done by the Fire Department. AMR is the 2nd backup provider. King Ambulance is the 3rd backup provider.

Medic Ambulance is the 911 provider in Solano County.

Riggs Ambulance is the 911 provider in Merced County.

AMR is the 911 provider in Monterey County.

By the way, I forgot to mention what IFT is. It's interfacility transfers. The majority of calls will be non emergent BLS transfers from one facility to another. A very common example is picking a patient up from a skilled nursing facility and transporting them to their dialysis appointment. Although the majority of IFT units and type of calls are BLS, some IFT companies also have ALS units and many of them have CCT units too. Outside of the bay area, these ALS units might be used as backup 911 occasionally. In the bay area, IFT ambulances are very very very very very rarely used for backup 911 even when an MCI occurs. If one does occur, the IFT ambulance will usually be sent to the MCI rather than doing backup 911.

Good luck. o/

San Benito County AMR just opened up. Might be a little bit of a drive for you but they do 48 hour shifts.

I've worked 911 in ALCO, Santa Cruz Co, City and County of Honolulu, and am emergency accredited in San Benito Co. Point being, I've been in a few different 911 systems and believe me when I tell you that San Benito is a really fun place to work and has a great group of employees. That said, it is a very very small county and you better be pretty dialed/cool yourself to get on.

But, it's a 911 gig and it's open right now so put an app in. I'd choose it over Monterey County for sure.

SFFD might open up again next year when the EMT list expires. It was supposed to expire this year but they extended it another year. Get dialed for that application process if you want to be one of the highest paid transport EMTs/Medics in the country. Their retirement is still 3%@50 too. They typically hire Medics as EMTs though. They upgrade their medics from within.

Other than that? I'd recommend AMR San Mateo County or CoCo.

I haven't heard too many good things about Rural Metro or P+ but beggars can't be choosers, the money is good, and they run two of the largest counties in the Bay; so apply. I'd still go with an AMR county first if you have that option.

I've never worked for a BLS company. AMR used to have a large BLS division when I first started that they made everyone spend 6 months in before working on the ALS side. So I can't give you an opinion on that other than BLS shifts are fine on occasion with a good partner but fulltime it will burn you out on EMS faster than anything else. Personally, i'd just apply for 911 jobs and go to nursing school in the meantime if I were you. I know you're not going to listen but I think that is the best advice I could give a new EMT knowing what I know now lol.
