I understand that the KKK-A-1822A defines ambulance specifications, but does the KKK part actually stand for anything, or is it just a random string of letters?

i have never seen it defined, which is far from saying that it has no definition.

The triple K standards were a part of a Federal funding for more than just ambulances. It also was Federal grant monies in developing many things from the late 60's to mid 70's. Just like many other poor choices of words, numbers and names, it has NO relevance to the common slang of the Grand Order of the Ku Klux Klan.

Maybe those Newark medics thought different, Rid? :)

I think it's probably just part of a numbering scheme. There's probably a KKJ-something-something, JJR-something-something, etc.
