So I live in Vancouver, WA just a few miles north of Portland, OR. There are only a few rigs hiring EMT-B's. I have sent in my applications, but seeing as I have no experience (working as an EMT), I have to consider the idea of not getting one of these jobs. So.....I need a plan B.

NWhitney suggested I try getting on as a volunteer at Clackamas Fire (they help out with costs for paramedic school and other contributions), and once I do so, enrolling in paramedic school.

Of course there is also the option of moving a little to secure a job. I am getting married this summer, and ideally would like to stay in the Portland Metro area, but that may not be realistic. I am currently employed, though EMS is what I want to get into (for the long haul hopefully). What I need is advice. Please?

Hey man, that sounds awesome with the upcoming wedding and all. But... you may have to move or be willing to commute to a paid job to get experience. If you want it, make it happen. I know alot of guys who enjoy the vol time at a station. Your experience will differ everywhere you go. GOOD LUCK MAN

Here is my tip to you. Take your resume. Walk into the nearest AMR or what ever. Ask for HR and hand them your resume. Just because there is no listing does not mean they are not hiring. Oh and wear a suit. That is about how half of the AMR guys I know go hired.
