Hi,

Im in school and i just finished my first semester of health sciences. I did really well and i should have no problem getting into the paramedic program but im nervous about paying more tuition without knowing for sure if i can handle the life of a paramedic. Is it possible to go on a ride along in an ambulance, and if so how would i accomplish that?

Yes, most agencies will allow you to do a ride along on an ambulance for a shift.

However, I would suggest taking an EMT-B class. You'll learn some stuff, see if you're interested in that capacity, and a lot of locations also require you to do some clinical time in a hospital and an ambulance.

Do the semester, and if you decide you don't like EMS, you only spent 4 months, instead of 2 years. However, if you decide you DO want to continue on for your Paramedic, you will be one step closer as you HAVE to have your EMT before you can get your Paramedic.

Sure! Call up any local agency or fire dept in your area and inquire about it. Usually they are willing to accommodate you. Usually it just involves taking down your license and info then a waiver. If the crew you ride with is good, you'll get the exact feel for the job and you'll be able to gauge if it's right for you.

At my college there is a field internship for EMT-B (PMED 106 at American River College apart of Los Rios Community College in Sacramento, Ca) that run nothing but 911 calls with the fire department and rounds in a few different level one trauma centers. In the course, you have to do like 200 hours in the field both on a reg and in the ED. Check with your college to see if they have a program like this to expose you to the work that you are about to get into.
