I had some hesitation on my first few rides. Ultimately, the one thing that cleared the air for me was being straight up with my preceptors. I basically told my crew, "If it seems like I'm a little tentative and unsure, it's because honestly, I'm a guest in your house. And when I'm in your house, I don't want to make a mess of things or get in the way. This is your rig." My preceptor paramedic then basically outlined a list of all the things he'd expect an EMT assisting him to do, and from that point on I was free to jump in if anything on that list came up.

Much like with anything else, I think expectation setting is huge. What EMTLMM said is spot on.
