Induced Heart Attack in Pig Video

At least if they didn't use drugs on the pig, they could have a luau after?

Hey, try goat and dog labs for airway and GSW training.

For those that are curious, a large number of animal tests are performed on Beagles, since they're relatively small (cages can be stacked in a smaller area) and are generally dosile and trusting. I read an article about a trial GSK held where they needed to test a drug on atrophied muscles. Their soltuion? Put 20 beagles in cages and tie their back ends up and to the top of the cage. Leave them this way for 2-3 months, then come back and inject them with a variety of random drugs that ultimately lead to a painful death.

My view on animal research is that there should be some type of organization that screens all requests to use animals in research. To get approval, the company or educational institution would need to prove that:
  • All technological, chemical, or other routes to obtain similar data have been exhaused or are drastically inadequate.
  • The animal's welfare has been the primary concern and all measures have been taken to try to ensure that no needless pain or suffering (physical & psychological) is forced upon the animal.
  • Only drugs or medical tests that have a researched, documented, and extremely strong potential to be lifesaving for humans would be able to conduct animal trials that are unable to provide for the animal's welfare as listed above. (In other words: Hair loss and erectile disfunction drugs would obviously not make the cut, but neither would things such as pain medications.)
Said organization would also conduct random checks on any approved medical trials to ensure that the approval requirements were being followed. Lastly, some guidelines were put in place to limit the time that animals were subjected to such tests, and arrange for their adoption afterwards. (Provided there was no need for euthanization.)

It isn't reasonable to ban animal medical trials completely, but there needs to be at least some control over who can perform such trials and how they're handled.
