Had a simple PI on the freeway today. Nothing big, we know the roads were crappy
Arrived, babysitter, 11 year old girl and like 9 year old kid standing on side of freeway. Girl was banged up from the airbag but thats it. Kid had a small bump on his head.
No biggie so we get them to the ambulance, (200+ feet from the scene).
Car 1 is on the right shoulder, car 2 is in the middle. No PD on yet.
I got the girl in the back of the rig, and was about to help the kid up the back when I heard my partner yell something. He was looking for flares to possibly put out. Freeway on a nice curve, lower elevation.
I turned around to see a car slide between both accidents and come STRAIGHT for me and the truck. Seriously I'm watching it and thinking oh my god. I grab the kid by his coat and litterly threw him on the bench seat. Something told me to shut the left back door.
As I'm litterly diving inside to protect myself, and make sure I'm inside with the patient I slam the door. Not more then one second later, the car slides by us. My partner was on the shoulder/ramp and said that car missed me and the rig by less then 1 foot. ONE FOOT!. I had slush covered my whole backside I guess from the car so it must have been close. Car was traveling more then 70mph too.
The small kid was yelling to me to get in the driver seat and go and I'm like HAH we aren't going anywhere boy just sit here, buckle up and DON'T MOVE! I watched a 2 car accident turn into a 12+. Bad. Those were the only injuries though. It just wasn't safe to get back out and get in the driver seat. My partner is yelling on the radio as another car slid towards us and requesting PD and advising they need to shut the freeway down ASAP. Of course our dispatch "supervisor" (only one working) says "Well I'll call PD but we'll see if they want it closed down once they get there. The road may..." (I don't know what else was said since I was paying attention to the semi coming through the scene). Trust me, we were both very...you know the word..
So after PD gets there and shuts stuff down, I tried to get vitals from the girl and I'm seriously shaking like no other. I usually stay calm but yeah..
Finally get a set, jump outta the truck to drive, and decided to walk on the freeway a bit. I'm not exaggerating one bit when I said it was complete sheet of ice. I "skated" back to the truck it was that bad.
Just another day in paradise all I can say. Working my first 24 right now and thinking what a way to start it.
And yes, I was wearing my vest
Just thought I would share
