I looked thru the recommended threads (one has been closed, the other is over five years old) and didn't really find what I was looking for. I'm NOT asking for legal advice, I was just wondering if having a Hx of mental illness is something an employer can check. I was on an In-Patient unit back in January for a couple of days, on a hold. Since then, my psychiatrist has changed my medications and I am stabilized. I was just wondering if anyone knew if BLS/IFT providers can access that part of my medical records. When I was on an ambulance back in October, the Medic said that BLS/IFT providers probably wouldn't check that, but ALS providers might. Anyone have any ideas?

It depends on your local licensing requirements I would think.

Here in CA, I don't believe there is any place you are required to disclose your medical history other than during the evaluation for CA DMV DL-51 Medical Card for driving commercial and emergency vehicles.

This evaluation does require you to disclose medical history that may interfere with your ability to to drive.

See http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/rules-regu...el-Psychiatric-Psychiatric-MEP-Panel-Opin.pdf for more info. It doesn't automatically exclude you, but you may require additional evaluation by a psychiatrist. Also noteworthy is that many medication classes, such as benzos, will exclude you from obtaining the medical examiners card.

"Mental Disorders §391.41(b)(9)
A person is physically qualified to drive a commercial motor vehicle if that person: Has no mental, nervous, organic or functional disease or psychiatric disorder likely to interfere with the ability to drive a motor vehicle safely."

"Those individuals who are highly susceptible to frequent states of emotional instability (schizophrenia, affective psychoses, paranoia, anxiety or depressive neuroses) may warrant disqualification."

It seems very open to interpretation.

I am in the SF Bay Area. I already have my medical examiner's card, I got it before all the *stuff* hit the fan. I'm still probably a few months away from putting in any applications. Trying to get other things in my life organized before I throw in a big schedule change/shift.
