Hi everyone! I'm Soozey from Pittsburgh.
I'm starting my training to be an EMT-B in January, and hope to becoming a paramedic when I have met all the prerequisites for the additional certification.
I currently work as a graphic designer for a performing arts organisation. Ever since my parents realised that I could draw I have been told that I needed to put my talents to work and make a career out of art. I never thought I could do anything else... I have always been interested in science and medicine, but never did anything with it because I was supposed to be an artist. So, I ended up getting my Bachelor of Science degree in Graphic Design from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and have been working as a graphic designer for the past five years. I have a full-time job and a freelance business. I love design, truly love it, and I think I'm pretty good at it if I do say so myself!
However, when I ask myself, "What do I really want to do with my life?" my current situation does not measure up. I want to help people and make a positive difference in the lives of my fellow humans. I thought I could do that by working for the arts, but I've come to find that it's not worth the abuse of my corrosive work environment. I am not making a difference here, nor would I be if I worked for a design firm or another company as an in-house designer. For the past year, I have been thinking more and more about my previous interest in becoming a paramedic. Whenever I read about the job I get the feeling of, "Yes. This is what I need to do." I can still keep my freelance business going (on a more limited basis) when I'm finally working as an EMT, and can actually do what it it I really want to do with it: specifically serve nonprofit human service organisations and provide affordable, high-quality design befitting the importance of their work. We shall see...
I am very excited to start my training in January!
