Sorry if this is the wrong place, but I am lost.

Hi, I am looking to apply to get into an EMS job. One place that I found that is hiring around me is hiring paramdics and basic EMTS.

Whats the difference? I'm guessing the paramedic is more experiencd and the basic emt is more of the helper?

I am seeing that the full paramedic job requires a lot of training and time, which I dont have right this minute. But the basic EMT only requires a basic emt license.

I am not really sure waht that is, but I found this:http://www.lcc.edu/publicservice/emt/

Now, I am guessing that is what that is.

Would this be a good thing to get into? I could get the course done in 8 weeks which is no problem, and get a job that will give me expereince while going to school for the full paramedic.

Is this right?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Yep, that's the starts of it. I will tell you EMS has always fed my family. It has been good to me. I know a lot of other people EMS has taken good care of too.

Try and see if you can do some "ride time" at a local ambulance service. It will give you a taste of what the job is about.

Good luck.

Welcome to EMTLife.com!

There are many differences between an EMT-Basic and EMT-Paramedic (aka Paramedic). An EMT-B is like the associates degree of EMS. Then you have EMT-Intermediate/Specialist (masters degree), and finally EMT-Paramedic (Highest nationally recognized level). Every Paramedic must first gain their EMT license, and EMTs learn the fundamentals of EMS. Here is a great article on the differences between an EMT and Paramedic.

I completed my EMT-Basic in six weeks, and didn't feel as though it was too fast.

Lansing Community College has a GREAT EMT program, and I would highly suggest you take it there. I'm a recent MSU grad who thought about going back to LCC to gain my Paramedics license.

LCC is big on experience, and I would suggest getting some experience as an EMT before moving on to the paramedic program. I know for a fact there are agencies in the area that hire EMTs (EMT-Basics), so you shouldn't have a problem gaining employment.

Feel free to ask any questions. I gained my EMT license in Michigan back in 2002, and worked as an EMT-Basic through my years at MSU.

Thanks for the response.

I am a recent Ferris State Graduate. I have been going the Police Officer way, but have always been interested in the first response medical.

I am in the Oakland county area, and have also come across this:

I dont mind lansing if this place isnt up to par, but the commute would be much faster.

Yeah, I should. I did an internship with the state police and found that the most exciting, for lack of a better tem, calls were the medical injury calls, usually car accidents. I dont mean to sound sadisitc, but I just liked those because it was the biggest chance to be in there getting the medical things done when the person life really depended on it. (not me personally, but watching others do it really tunred me on into the medical side)

Thats when I really thought that I should look into the medical side of public service.

Hey! welcome and it sounds like you are moving in the right direction. I love EMS it is the type of job where you will always keep on learning! Remember, no question is ever stupid! :)
