My name is Marcus and I am a Pararescueman in the USAF. I've been a Paramedic for 9 years. I started out as an EMT-B working with Gerogetown County EMS in South Carolina. It was a fantastic place to begin my EMS career. This is where I met one of the best medics I've ever had the pleasure of working with, Mike Ostrander. His knowledge and mentorship were essential elements in my life and career. After graduating paramedic school, I worked with Horry County EMS for 2 years, than decided for a career change. I enlisted in the Air Force and decided to be a "high speed" paramedic if you will. Being a Pararescueman is a great adventure, but I do miss working as a civilian medic. My future ambitions are to get my RN and someday work as a civilian Flight Nurse and have a part time medic job on the side. Well there you have it! I look forward to discussing medicine and having fun with all of you. Take care and I'll see you in the ditches.

Just a blast from the past with your comments. I worked for Horry County EMS in 1981 and 1982 -- we lived outside of Conway near "Pauley Swamp" along the Pee Dee. Great fishing.
My second son was born a rebel there as well. Great EMS - but I never liked the Myrtle Beach rotation - worked with "Snooks Harrelson" These are good memories for me.
Life has taken me to Northern New York now running a service.

Keep up the excellent work. I am proud of you.

It is really good to hear from a previous employee of Horry County. I'm sure things were a lot different back in the 80's. Anyway, I worked all over the county, but mainly Medic 1 which of course is downtown Myrtle Beach on 10th Ave. Absolutely crazy call volume at that station! Things have certainly changed since you and I have been out of the county. They actually combined Horry County Fire and EMS and it is now called Horry County Fire/Rescue. This occurred approximately 6 years ago right after I enlisted. After the merger, some of my pervious partners advised that things went down hill drastically, but are now on the up slope.

Wow, I never knew there were so many Horry County folks on here. I was with Surfside Rescue back in the mid 80's and ran many a call with you MBRS guys. My "day job" was with the MBAFB Fire Department, so we saw a lot of each other then, too. No one who has never worked a resort area can fully appreciate the shift from sleepy beach town to flat out insanity when the tourists arrive in May, and the relief that sets in during the week following Labor Day. The call volume was incredible, along with the unbelievable variety. Good times, and I do miss them so!

Isn't it actually too small of a world. Sorry I have not been on to get back. I did hear they combined EMS and Fire. Still sure the rotation at the Beach is an animal though. I make it back every couple of years to see my friends and see the growth in the area. Still enjoyed fishing the shad on the Pee Dee in the cypress flat boat with my partners. Keep in touch gents.
