With head trauma why nausea/puking? I'm thinking something about the brain stem and regulating pressure. But then, why not explosive diarrhea or urination or some other sort of thing? Just a weird thing, or is there a reason that the body wants all the stomach contents out specifically?

Possibly an insult to the vestibular system, or could simply be the pain like some migraine suffers???? Others may have a better explanation. I’m certainly not a neurologist, but I would also like to hear other explanations/thoughts.

That reminds me....I asked my paramedic friend if "insult" and "injury" meant the same thing last night. He made some flip comment about relationships and told me to drink my beer and stop trying to making him think.

Well with increased ICP comes decreased cerebral blood flow which can mean less perfusion to certain parts of the brain which can cause vertigo, dizziness, vomiting, etc. There's also the issue of the swelling affecting the area postrema which is basically your "holy :censored::censored::censored::censored: I'm gonna puke" trigger.

To keep it simple, injury usually results from an insult. If that helps.

Today I've learned that the postrema is outside the blood brain barrier, I read about a 2002 study in Japan that tested a drug that may be of use in curbing the emetic response to drugs that increase dopamine concentrations (wiki entry on Area postrema: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Area_postrema). The study investigated morphine-induced emesis in ferrets. I read about the vestibular system (Vestibular System Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vestibular_system)and watched a great you tube video about chicken head tracking:

All very interesting and way more productive than facebook, but most likely will not be on my test tonight.

Thanks for the information! Great stuff.

See if there is a discrete part of the brain that causes vomiting and how it is affected by head knocking.

An INSULT is generic for an instance of something adverse occurring to the pt. A MI is an insult to the myocardium, but it is not trauma. Trauma is result of an insult the body cannot accommodate. (E.G., I tap your arm, nothing happens, the insult was sufficient to cause (visible) trauma. If you were a hemophiliac, it could cause purpura or deeper bruising; the insult caused trauma to blood vessels).
