So i just got my acceptance letter from Weyburn collage to start the Primary Care Paramedic course Jan 13th. Only problem is is its a 4 hour drive from where my house is. Its only a weekend thing Friday, Saturday, Sunday for 7 hours each day; But still. The course goes from Jan 2012 till March of 2013. So thats driving 4 hours there and 4 hours back every weekend for a little over a year. My mom lives only half hour away from Weyburn so i dont need to buy food or hotel, so good on that level. The reason i took this course was because the city i live in Saskatoon has a 2-3 year wait list. Am i nuts for driving this far every weekend just to get my dream job. My hubby is kinda upset that i am giving every weekend up just to go to school 4 hours away when i can just wait for a spot here. I am already accepted so no way i am giving up my spot!! Any advice?? Am i nuts for doing this??

I don't think you're crazy for it. We have a guy in our medic class that drives 3+ hours to go to class every weekend and sometimes on the weekdays PRN for special classes. If it is something that really means that much to you then hopefully your spouse will understand and be supportive through the process. Good luck! :)

Yes, this sounds very hectic. I'm sure you won't be getting any time for self study. But little pain today will make your future bright. This is the only thing which I can say you. You have to keep yourself motivated, in order to get good results. Good Luck!!!!.

It's a marriage thing.

Not being a friend and having seen bad results from meddling, I'm not weighing in except to say you each need to look at what the other is seeing.

I attended a trade school for my PCP (EMT-I) and did my ACP (EMT-P) part time. For about a year and a half I drove over an hour each way for class or clinical 3-5 times a week. It can be alot but it is well worth it. Something I used to do was tape lectures and listen to them on my drive back and forth.

re

Fairly normal occurance I would think, and I did the same during my program. Find a few other students and rent a cheap apartment and split the bill. Works great and it will be cheaper then motelss each weekend. Plus you will have a flop house for clinicals during the week.

That's probably just the class time, how about when you add in the ride time and hospital clinical time??? That might be another 2 days a week. Can you do your ride time/clinical time with a hospital and service closer to home???

I don't think you're crazy for doing this. Lots of people do and are very successful. Being able to stay with your mom sure will help to lower costs and stress.
I don't think the issue is whether or not you're crazy for wanting to do this. The issue has to do with your husband who probably has some valid concerns. This will have a major impact on him as well. Do you have any kids? I'm not saying you should give up your spot rather you need to address your husbands concerns which includes making sure he knows you know they are valid. If you can get those ironed out then great go for it.
