Hello, My name is Austin and I'm currently awaiting to go to bootcamp for the USMC. I've always wanted to help people and I really like the idea of becoming a paramedic. But I had a few questions, that I'm having a hard time finding the answer too.

1. Do I have to become an EMT before a Paramedic?

2. Where can I get the education to become a licensed Paramedic?
(every college in my area either doesn't have it or I'm not looking for the correct thing)

3. In ohio, what are some places I could work as a paramedic? I.E hospitals, nursing homes etc.

4. If I don't go to college where do I go for the training?

5. What are the benefits like? Do you get medical?

6. What is the differance between an EMT and Paramedic?

7. Do I have to become a firefighter to become a paramedic?

and the final question.. How rewarding is it?

I would love to know what you all think of these. I'm not scared of seeing dark or morbid things, I'm not scared of lack of sleep, or lots of overtime. I have to be in a career where I am helping my fellow man.

1. Do I have to become an EMT before a Paramedic? yes

2. Where can I get the education to become a licensed Paramedic?
(every college in my area either doesn't have it or I'm not looking for the correct thing) I went to a community college but there are trade schools out there, maybe some people from OH can chime in on that part

3. In ohio, what are some places I could work as a paramedic? I.E hospitals, nursing homes etc. I only have a generic answer for this (ER tech, ambulance, fire) anything specific is best to get info from someone who lives in your state

4. If I don't go to college where do I go for the training? trade schools are good, they tend to cost a lot more though. make sure it is accredited

5. What are the benefits like? Do you get medical? yes, and dental/vision. I think theyre decent, ie don't have to pay a ton out of my check but ACA might be changing things.

6. What is the differance between an EMT and Paramedic? Im going to defer you to google/Wikipedia.

7. Do I have to become a firefighter to become a paramedic? No, usually people do it the other way around

and the final question.. How rewarding is it?
Very, it has its days for sure. but getting a legit call where you actually get to make a difference makes it all worth it for me. Im just in my internship but im always learning something new, and know that, that will never change.

Its more about being compassionate or at least nice to your 22 year old patient calling 911 at 3am for abdominal pain. It seems ridiculous to you and most likely does NOT need an ambulance ride to the ER but I see it as an opportunity to educate the patient. They may still be adamant about going and we have to take them. for the kind of work youll be doing the pay isn't all that great so just keep that in mind.

Im curious, if youre joining the Marines and they obviously borrow the navy for medical, why not be a medic in the Navy, or a medic as a civilian. What made you chose the Marines?

Yes you must be an EMT to be a medic. Your scope of practice is what separates the two. You can do a lot more as a medic. You don't have to be a firefighter unless you work in a system where your department runs fire and ems calls. You can work private ambulance work in hospitals. I don't know of nursing homes here in Florida that hire medics but Idk about ohio. School is most commonly found at local community college or check Lincoln technical institute. As for rewarding ems is a calling brother. Working long hours for meager pay you have to have the call or you will get burned out. This career provides a perspective that is seldom found anywhere else especially if you work in a busy system. I encourage you to go to EMT school and then try and get hired private ambulance and see how you like it before making the investment in medic school. And you will see during your clinical time in school as to which arena so to speak that you want to work (on the road vs in a hospital)

I joined the marines because I have a passion for their brotherhood and their challenges. I'm still a bit undecided on if I should go paramedic or try my luck going into something more like SWAT (since my MOS is assualtman infantry), but I love the idea of being a paramedic as much as I love the idea of being a marine. :D Pay is nothing to me. I'm not a materialistic man. As long as I can take care of myself and my girlfriend (who is going to school for social working). I can live a very happy life as a paramedic/marine :D

I should have also mentioned I'm going reservist not active. :o
