Greetings-
I was considering getting training in this field or maybe nursing, but have been worried about the background check(s). And if a felony conviction(first offenders) would still show up on the "arrest history" check that is performed by whatever institution your training is through. It occurred in 1992,and was a Burglary conviction upgraded from a Criminal Tresspassing charge, although nothing was ever taken. For time's sake i'll spare the complicated details. But I also have a DUI and attempting to elude from the same time period.
Basically,I am more concerned about getting a job after schooling and the other check i understand is run by the NR before you can even be licensed. And am thinking i may not even be accepted in a nursing program. any help with this is appreciated.
thanks-

Check with your education program and licensing agencies. Be forthcoming with your background.

The short answer is, maybe… Maybe not.

Please be aware our forum does not allow the offer or solicitation of any legal advice. If you have specific questions, our best advice is to always consult an attorney.

We had to do a background check before Medic school, wouldn't have got in with a felony.

First thing you need to do is call the state licensing boards (nursing and/or EMS) in the state you want to practice and ask them if you will be eligible for licensure. Getting any answer at all may be difficult, getting the answer you want may be very difficult. It may be worth the time and money to get an attorney to help you with this process.

After that, talk to schools.

When i did my Basic, We went through class and then before our testing we did our background checks. As been prviously said, you may, you may not be able to get your license. Be mindful, if you get your license anyplace you go for employment will do a CORI, and Its a turn off to many employers in general to have a felony, cnt imagine how EMS would be. not trying to discourage you, go for it, find out if it will affect you, and I wish you the best!

I'm fairly certain a DUI will preclude you from getting hired driving an ambulance.

And the felony conviction will likely preclude you from even taking a class.

Effectively, these are career killers.

Don't consider this legal advice, consult an attorney...

I had a guy working for me as a firearms instructor who had a similar issue. He had a bogus charge from 20 years ago. Our attorneys helped him get it expunged. Some cases can be expunged (removed) or sealed (covered so no one has access, with few limitations). Speak to an attorney. You might be able to get it expunged, especially if you have a positive history for the last 10-20 years. Check into it.

Generally organizations that accept Medicare are prohibited from employing felons. Very sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Hopefully he was not acting as a firearms instructor (thus committing multiple additional felonies) until the charge was expunged ....
