Hey everyone, thanks so much for taking time to read my post. I was hoping someone could answer some questions about the FDNY EMS for me. I am from Oklahoma, and currently a member of my local Volunteer Fire/EMS and I absolutely love it. I hope to get on with a paid Department within the next few years. I have been looking at Fire and EMS departments near me, and all over the country to put down on my list to test for. I checked out FDNY and want to test for them sometime just on the crazy chance ill actually get a call back afterwards. My questions are do they usually accept out of state applicants well? Also, I have seen some info on their haztac units and am very interested in that. Does anyone know how someone goes about getting on with a haztac unit? Are they hand selected, or is it something you apply for like a promotional exam? Thanks again for reading my post, and for any answers given.
 
You have to have NYS certification to apply. Haz-tac classes happen randomly. There is a time with FDNY requirement as well as a couple of other requirements but it isn't particularly competitive. To become a rescue medic after HazTac is competitive - that has a 12% differential - HazTac alone does not.
 
Thanks for your reply! If I do go ahead and decide to try for FDNY I plan on applying for reciprocity from my current state. Do you happen to have any info on how easily they accept reciprocity? I would think it would be relatively the same skills taught no matter where you go.

You just missed the test bud, go ahead and try to get the reciprocity now while you have time the new test should be out next september.

Yeah, I plan on taking it next year. I wasnt quite ready for it this year yet had to much going on, so I'm just trying to get everything lined out before I start it all. Are you with FDNY?
