Hey everyone. I am taking my EMT-B course come Feb 4th 2015 and my ultimate goal is to work for the FDNY. I know I am not certified yet and it's still far away, but I'm really just trying to get some information. Can someone explain the process of applying to FDNY EMS? I know there is a civil service exam, but I'm so confused about how the whole process works. Can someone just give me the jist or the steps you would take if you were to pass the certification exam and you wanted to apply to FDNY?

1. Get EMT certification

2. Call FDNY to get on the waiting list. Follow instructions under "Apply by Phone!" http://www.nyc.gov/html/fdny/html/community/ems_employment.shtml

3. Take the civil service exam in September http://www.nyc.gov/html/dcas/html/home/home.shtml

4. Wait for FDNY to call you.

In the meantime, get experience which will add up to points on the civil service exam, increasing the time in which FDNY will call you.

- Consider IFT/Transport work w/ private ambulances, keeping in mind transcare & seniorcare does 911
- Consider volunteer ambulances which is arguably the fastest way to get do emergencies considering they screen police radios and jump on them
- Do ride alongs w/ FDNY EMS while in EMT school if your school doesn't arrange for ambulance ride alongs

I'm starting EMT-B Course in January at Queensborough Community College. What school will you be attending?

How long is yours john? And does it include ambulance ride alongs? ECP is 5 months and we only worked a 12hr shift at an ED

Thanks Adam! Any idea on how long it takes for FDNY to call you once you put your name on the list?

I am starting mine at St. Johns in Feb!
I heard St Johns offers one of or thee best EMT-B Programs in the city. Goodluck! Did you just recently enrolled or were you on a waiting list? Because i heard they're just now opening up there Spring Semester for enrollment this month?

Thanks John, you too! I know that the seats fill up fast, I was able to openly enroll as soon as registration opened. You had to have your deposit in within a week or they take you out of the class! When I signed up a week ago, there was about 30 seats left! I was actually looking into Queensboro as well but didn't want to go through the trouble of getting my CPR cert. first? I was a bit confused on the admissions process and I know St. Johns does all of that certifying while enrolled in the EMT program.

Funny you mentioned that because yeah they do require you to get a particular CPR Cert in order to enroll but but it has to be CPR for Professional Rescuers which i have been having trouble getting outside the school because supposedly you need certain credentials to get that. So i'm just going to have to get it through the school itself. So yeah i can see why you wanted to avoid that annoyance.

Oh wow I didn't know about the "Professional Rescuers" part... yeah I would have no clue how to get that.

Shortest I've heard people wait is a few months and the longest is 2 years. The closer you are to the September civil service exam the better. I'm so pissed I didn't get certified before September which will decrease my wait time significantly. Oh well theres next year, and I'll do what I can in the "civilian" sector.

Also your going to want to start studying on Anatomy and Physiology for Emergency care NOW! As iv been advised by many in the field. The recommended textbook is "Anatomy and Physiology for Emergency Care by Bledsoe & Martini". You can purchase it for cheap on Half.com. Amazon was selling it for $90 i got it for $30 on Half.com used

Thanks! I'll definitely get that... I just got the Kaplan EMT-B book in the mail today lol, but I am trying to prepare before I actually start the course so I'll definitely get that book as well. I've heard quite a bit about it myself!

I'll be done with the program in May and throw my name on the waiting list then, hopefully I'll get a few months of experience either volunteering or working before the registration period for the exam goes starts in August/September. The exam is only given once per year?

Yes every September

As was told that most all New EMT's usually have to start off at a Transport company to get experiance before any 911 EMS will hire you. Transcare and Seniorcare are always hiring from what im told.

Yeah I heard the same! I was looking into Transcare as well!
