Anyone see scientific documentation about the effects of working different shift patterns and lengths?
I seem to remember reading in nursing that shifts over 8 hours produced more nursing errors. I know from experience working rotating eight hour shifts and 12 hr shifts switching each month from day to nocs, it screwed up my circadian rythmn permanently.

Please reply with URL's or references. Or war stories, always welcome.

re

we had this issue come up when i was still tech'ing in a ED. We ended up changing all of the lighting in the ED to the full spectrum bulbs.

Google

"circadian changes with varying shift work"

Lots of interesting read's there

Thans Corky.

the rotating eight hour shift (dispatching):
2 days 3 swings 4 midnights 3 off; 4 swings 3 mids 2 off. I lasted ten months, second-longest to that point.

I'm on the second half of a 24 hour shift, so I'm getting a kick out of this conversation.
